Communion Ministers, formally known as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, assist in the reverent distribution of the Eucharist during Mass. Communion Ministers help ensure that the faithful can receive the Body and Blood of Christ in a timely and prayerful manner. They approach the altar after the priest has received Communion and distribute the consecrated host or chalice to the congregation. Their presence supports the flow of the liturgy. Communion Ministers help the Church fulfill its mission to share the Eucharist—the source and summit of our faith—with the gathered community. Their presence at the altar is a sign of unity, devotion, and love.
